Helping hand: a GSC staff helping a wheelchair bound patron at GSC 1 Utama (new wing).CHENG Kin Wai likes to watch movies but his disability has always been a hindrance.

Now Golden Screen Cinema (GSC) in One Utama (new wing) has fully equipped movie halls for the handicapped.

"I cannot describe how happy I am that GSC has this kind of facilities. Not many business places provide these amenities for the disabled. Our needs are often forgotten," he said.

Chen, 39, and 14 others from the Beautiful Gate Home were treated to a special screening of X-Men 3: The Last Stand.

Also at the screening to celebrate that cinema's first anniversary were more than 100 underprivileged children from Rumah Hope, CHILD, Shelter 2, Shelter 3, Assunta Children's Society, Sentul Community Centre, Yellow House, and Rumah Victory.

The charity screening was also GSC;s way to announce the first disabled-friendly cinema.

GSC general manager Irving Chee and senior manager (exhibition) Liew Aing Suan also took Beautiful Gate director Sia Siew Chin and her colleagues on a tour of the cinema.

"Except for the Gold Class hall, other halls here have space for wheelchairs. However, we can still park wheelchairs in the Gold Class hall as the seats there are removable," said Chee.

He added that GSC also incorporated ramps and a hydraulic lift so that disabled patrons can use all its movie halls in comfort.

GSC staff are also trained to assist those in wheelchairs to their seats and the washrooms.

Tickets for the disabled cost RM6 a person.

After the X-men screening, the special guests were treated to a popcorn combo set and lunch, courtesy of Burger King.
